What CBSE Second Board Exam (or Phase 2 exam)

The CBSE Second Board Exam (or Phase 2 exam) is an optional, second opportunity for Class 10 students to improve their scores in up to three subjects or clear failed papers within the same academic year. Implemented from 2026, it allows students to take the test in May 2026, with the best of two scores recorded, supporting the NEP 2020 initiative to reduce exam pressure.

Key Details About the Second Board Exam (2026)

  • Purpose: To improve marks or pass failed subjects (previously compartments) without waiting for the next year.
  • Optional: It is not mandatory. Only students who wish to improve or fail the first exam take this, and they can improve in up to 3 subjects.
  • Timing: Scheduled for May 15–21, 2026, following the February 2026 first exam.
  • Rules: The higher score of the two attempts (First or Second) will be considered for the final result.
  • Mandatory First Exam: Students must have taken the February 2026 exam to be eligible for the second exam.

Registration: Schools must submit a fresh List of Candidates (LOC) for students opting for this exam, with a final window in mid-April 2026.
